Calling all members of all Tribal Nations!

As we speak, the company Highland Copper is trying to start the Copperwood Mine right next to the Kaug Wudju (the Porcupine Mountains), the largest unlogged old growth forest of its kind. They would store 40+ million tons of waste upstream from the sacred Gichigami (Lake Superior). Their power grid would lay the foundation for data centers and more. Copperwood is not just a dangerous mining project — it's the beginning of a broader transformation to turn our most pristine land and water into an industrial corridor.

The U.S. government is considering lending them $250 million to advance the project, and Michigan may provide more.

We need to take a stand.

Starting on August 14th at 3pm, we will set up Animikiiwadiswan (Thunderbird Nest) on Ottawa National Forest land right next to the proposed mine site. We will camp just west of the North Country Trail parking lot, 20 minutes north of Wakefield, MI, on County Road 519. We will perform ceremonies and provide literature to visitors to educate the world about this dangerous proposal. Members of all Tribal Nations are invited. Non-Tribal people are welcome to join in solidarity, provided they respect the leadership of organizers.

No drugs or alcohol permitted. This is a remote area, so bring food and water. Children are welcome.

This is a remote area with no electricity or running water and limited cell service. The map above shows the location of well pumps for water. Gichigami and the Presque Isle River are the best areas for bathing. The southernmost waterfall, Lepisto Falls, is a 20 minute walk from the Treaty Camp.

I am a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. I am also the Co-Executive Manager of Mukwa and Vice President of Protect the Porkies.

I helped set up a Treaty Camp in Big Bay, Michigan, when the Rio Tinto Mine came to destroy our sacred site and contaminate our water. I helped the Camp in Wisconsin and also with the Talon Metals resistance in Minnesota with Honor the Earth.

Starting August 14th at 2pm Central Time, I'm setting up Animikiiwadiswan to pray for and protect this sacred area from those who would destroy it.
