The Protect the Porkies campaign, at its heart, consists of many thousands of impassioned individuals from around Michigan and beyond, all chipping in a bit of effort to speak up for all entities like Lake Superior, the Porcupine Mountains, and their diverse inhabitants, which are too often denied a voice by human decision-makers.
But coordinating thousands of participants takes a lot of work! The Protect the Porkies core team consists of just a few volunteers, based in the Upper Peninsula, who dedicate considerable time and energy to this important cause, all without a salary.
As a small team with no beauracracy, we strive to make efficient and constructive use of all funding, which contributes to:
- trips to the Michigan Capitol to meet with lawmakers
- local solidarity gatherings among community members
- larger events such as public protests and Native American-led Water Walks
- regular operating costs such as travel expenses and literature printing
- and much more!
