The Anishiative is an Indigenous-led organization working to resist the development of the proposed Copperwood and White Pine North mines, as well as other mining proposals within the watershed of the sacred Gichigami (Lake Superior), the largest, cleanest, and wildest of all Great Lakes and a priceless source of freshwater for all beings,
Industrial-scale metallic sulfide mining comprises, at most, the last two centuries of "heritage" for a small sliver of people descended from recently-arrived settlers from other continents. But Native Peoples have inhabited and stewarded these lands and waters for thousands of generations in a way which did not compromise the health of the planet. At a time when so much of our water, air, and soil is poisoned, when we must doubt before eating fish from the Lake, when the United Nations has just declared global water bankruptcy, the Anishiative seeks to elevate the voices of those who have been here the longest and whose wisdom is essential to restoring our relationship to the Living Earth.
