Development of the proposed Copperwood Mine has been stagnant for 15 years. Now Michigan may jumpstart the project by spending 50 million taxpayer dollars to fund the preliminary infrastructure necessary for the mine to start construction. The approval of the grant may also trigger an additional $250 million in debt financing from the Export-Important Bank of the United States. This would represent a significant chunk of the funding needed for the dangerous mine. Our only hope is to speak up, and fast!
Please reach out to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to urge her to "DENY the $50 million to fund Copperwood Mine infrastructure in Wakefield Township." You'll find a sample message below.
A voice message is the most powerful way to make yourself heard, but even better is to complete both options!
"Hello Governor Whitmer,
My name is _____ and I'm a resident of ______. I'm calling / writing today to urge you to deny the $50 million for Copperwood Mine infrastructure in Wakefield Township. It is a gross misuse of taxpayer dollars to advance such a dangerous project, which would store 30+ million tons of toxic waste next to Lake Superior, and disrupt the ecology and outdoor recreation experience at the Porcupine Mountains.
Please exercise a line-item veto if need be. It is also my understanding that you may have aspirations for higher office. Let me be clear: I will not vote for anyone, either in a primary or the general election, who approves funding which may result in the catastrophic contamination of Lake Superior, the largest cleanest source of surface freshwater on the continent.
Thank you."

The proposed Copperwood Mine may be on private property in the state of Michigan, but it jeopardizes three resources of tremendous collective value:
Tell Governor Whitmer that — at a time when the Earth is growing hotter and drier, and armed conflicts are being fought around the globe over access to water — no one has the right to endanger Lake Superior.
